Sloe gin recipe

  • 1lb/450g sloes
  • 8oz/225g castor sugar
  • 1¾ pint/1 litre gin

“Buy a good gin, one that you like, as it really will be reflected in the taste of your sloe gin.”

  1. Prick the skin of the sloes all over with a clean needle and place in a sterilized jar
  2. Pour in the sugar and gin, close the lid tightly and shake well
  3. Store in a cool, dark place and shake every day for a week or until the sugar has dissolved
  4. Then shake once a week for at least two months
  5. Strain the mixture into a sterilized bottle
  6. Leave to mature for at least three months – but no more than six, or the fruit might spoil
