As early as 1867, Charles Dickens was said to serve his guests a mixture of gin, Champagne, and lemon, which he called “Tom gin and Champagne cups.” But the French 75 is thought to be one of the earliest recognised cocktails, the recipe of which is below, amongst others:
French 75

Add the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker with some ice cubes. Shake and strain into a champagne flute, top with champagne and garnish with lemon peel.
Sloe Royale
- 25ml sloe gin
- 75ml champagne
Add the sloe gin to a champagne flute then pour in the champagne.
